Tennessee resident K. C. "Khan" Smith owes the internet service provider EarthLink $24 million. According to the CNN, in August 2001 he was slapped with a lawsuit accusing him of violating federal and state Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) statutes, the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1984, the federal Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 and numerous other state laws. On July 19, 2002 - having failed to appear in court - the judge ruled against him. Mr. Smith is a spammer.

Brightmail, a vendor of e-mail filters and anti-spam applications warned that close to 5 million spam "attacks" or "bursts" occurred in June 2002 and that spam has mushroomed 450 percent since June 2001. This pace continued unabated well into the beginning of 2004 when the introduction of spam filters began to take effect. PC World concurs.

Between one half and three quarters of all e-mail messages are spam or UCE (Unsolicited Commercial Email) - unsolicited and intrusive commercial ads, mostly concerned with sex, scams, get rich quick schemes, financial services and products, and health articles of dubious provenance. The messages are sent from spoofed or fake e-mail addresses. Some spammers hack into unsecured servers - mainly in China and Korea - to relay their missives anonymously.

Starting in 2003, malicious hackers began using spam to install malware - such as viruses, adware, spyware, and Trojans - on the unprotected personal computers of less savvy users. They thus transform these computers into "zombies", organize them into spam-spewing "bots" (networks), and sell access to them to criminals on penumbral boards and forums all over the Net.

Spam is an industry. Mass e-mailers maintain lists of e-mail addresses, often "harvested" by spamware bots - specialized computer applications - from Web sites. These lists are rented out or sold to marketers who use bulk mail services. They come cheap - c. $100 for 10 million addresses. Bulk mailers provide servers and bandwidth, charging c. $300 per million messages sent.

As spam recipients become more inured, ISPs less tolerant, and both more litigious - spammers multiply their efforts in order to maintain the same response rate. Spam works. It is not universally unwanted - which makes it tricky to outlaw. It elicits between 0.1 and 1 percent in positive follow ups, depending on the message. Many messages now include HTML, JavaScript, and ActiveX coding and thus resemble (or actually contain) viruses and Trojans.

Jupiter Media Matrix predicted in 2001 that the number of spam messages annually received by a typical Internet user will double to 1400 and spending on legitimate e-mail marketing will reach $9.4 billion by 2006 - compared to $1 billion in 2001. Forrester Research pegs the number at $4.8 billion in 2003.

More than 2.3-5 billion spam messages are sent daily. eMarketer puts the figures a lot lower at 76 billion messages in 2002. By 2006, daily spam output will soar to c. 15 billion missives, says Radicati Group. Jupiter projects a more modest 268 billion annual messages this year (2005). An average communication costs the spammer 0.00032 cents.

PC World quotes the European Union as pegging the bandwidth costs of spam worldwide in 2002 at $8-10 billion annually. Other damages include server crashes, time spent purging unwanted messages, lower productivity, aggravation, and increased cost of Internet access.

Inevitably, the spam industry gave rise to an anti-spam industry. According to a Radicati Group report titled "Anti-virus, anti-spam, and content filtering market trends 2002-2006", anti-spam revenues were projected to exceed $88 million in 2002 - and more than double by 2006. List blockers, report and complaint generators, advocacy groups, registers of known spammers, and spam filters all proliferate. The Wall Street Journal reported in its June 25, 2002 issue about a resurgence of anti-spam startups financed by eager venture capital.

ISPs are bent on preventing abuse - reported by victims - by expunging the accounts of spammers. But the latter simply switch ISPs or sign on with free services like Hotmail and Yahoo! Barriers to entry are getting lower by the day as the costs of hardware, software, and communications plummet.

The use of e-mail and broadband connections by the general population is spreading. Hundreds of thousands of technologically-savvy operators have joined the market in the last five years, as the dotcom bubble burst. Still, Steve Linford of the UK-based Spamhaus.org insists that most spam emanates from c. 80 large operators.

Now, according to Jupiter Media, ISPs and portals are poised to begin to charge advertisers in a tier-based system, replete with premium services. Writing back in 1998, Bill Gates described a solution also espoused by Esther Dyson, chair of the Electronic Frontier Foundation:

"As I first described in my book 'The Road Ahead' in 1995, I expect that eventually you'll be paid to read unsolicited e-mail. You'll tell your e-mail program to discard all unsolicited messages that don't offer an amount of money that you'll choose. If you open a paid message and discover it's from a long-lost friend or somebody else who has a legitimate reason to contact you, you'll be able to cancel the payment. Otherwise, you'll be paid for your time."

Subscribers may not be appreciative of the joint ventures between gatekeepers and inbox clutterers. Moreover, dominant ISPs, such as AT&T and PSINet have recurrently been accused of knowingly collaborating with spammers. ISPs rely on the data traffic that spam generates for their revenues in an ever-harsher business environment.

The Financial Times and others described how WorldCom refuses to ban the sale of spamware over its network, claiming that it does not regulate content. When "pink" (the color of canned spam) contracts came to light, the implicated ISPs blame the whole affair on rogue employees.

PC World begs to differ:

"Ronnie Scelson, a self-described spammer who signed such a contract with PSInet, (says) that backbone providers are more than happy to do business with bulk e-mailers. 'I've signed up with the biggest 50 carriers two or three times', says Scelson ... The Louisiana-based spammer claims to send 84 million commercial e-mail messages a day over his three 45-megabit-per-second DS3 circuits. 'If you were getting $40,000 a month for each circuit', Scelson asks, 'would you want to shut me down?'"

The line between permission-based or "opt-in" e-mail marketing and spam is getting thinner by the day. Some list resellers guarantee the consensual nature of their wares. According to the Direct Marketing Association's guidelines, quoted by PC World, not responding to an unsolicited e-mail amounts to "opting-in" - a marketing strategy known as "opting out". Most experts, though, strongly urge spam victims not to respond to spammers, lest their e-mail address is confirmed.

But spam is crossing technological boundaries. Japan has just legislated against wireless SMS spam targeted at hapless mobile phone users. Many states in the USA as well as the European parliament have followed suit. Ideas regarding a "do not spam" list akin to the "do not call" list in telemarketing have been floated. Mobile phone users will place their phone numbers on the list to avoid receiving UCE (spam). Email subscribers enjoy the benefits of a similar list under the CAN-Spam Act of 2003.

Expensive and slow connections make mobile phone spam and spim (instant messaging spam) particularly resented. Still, according to Britain's Mobile Channel, a mobile advertising company quoted by "The Economist", SMS advertising - a novelty - attracts a 10-20 percent response rate - compared to direct mail's 1-3 percent.

Net identification systems - like Microsoft's Passport and the one proposed by Liberty Alliance - will make it even easier for marketers to target prospects.

The reaction to spam can be described only as mass hysteria. Reporting someone as a spammer - even when he is not - has become a favorite pastime of vengeful, self-appointed, vigilante "cyber-cops". Perfectly legitimate, opt-in, email marketing businesses and discussion forums often find themselves in one or more black lists - their reputation and business ruined.

In January 2002, CMGI-owned Yesmail was awarded a temporary restraining order against MAPS - Mail Abuse Prevention System - forbidding it to place the reputable e-mail marketer on its Real-time Blackhole list. The case was settled out of court.

Harris Interactive, a large online opinion polling company, sued not only MAPS, but ISPs who blocked its email messages when it found itself included in MAPS' Blackhole. Their CEO accused one of their competitors for the allegations that led to Harris' inclusion in the list.

Coupled with other pernicious phenomena - such as viruses, Trojans, and spyware - the very foundation of the Internet as a fun, relatively safe, mode of communication and data acquisition is at stake.

Spammers, it emerges, have their own organizations. NOIC - the National Organization of Internet Commerce threatened to post to its Web site the e-mail addresses of millions of AOL members. AOL has aggressive anti-spamming policies. "AOL is blocking bulk email because it wants the advertising revenues for itself (by selling pop-up ads)" the president of NOIC, Damien Melle, complained to CNET.

Spam is a classic "free rider" problem. For any given individual, the cost of blocking a spammer far outweighs the benefits. It is cheaper and easier to hit the "delete" key. Individuals, therefore, prefer to let others do the job and enjoy the outcome - the public good of a spam-free Internet. They cannot be left out of the benefits of such an aftermath - public goods are, by definition, "non-excludable". Nor is a public good diminished by a growing number of "non-rival" users.

Such a situation resembles a market failure and requires government intervention through legislation and enforcement. The FTC - the US Federal Trade Commission - has taken legal action against more than 100 spammers for promoting scams and fraudulent goods and services.

"Project Mailbox" is an anti-spam collaboration between American law enforcement agencies and the private sector. Non government organizations have entered the fray, as have lobbying groups, such as CAUCE - the Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial E-mail.

But, a few recent anti-spam and anti-spyware Acts notwithstanding, Congress is curiously reluctant to enact stringent laws against spam. Reasons cited are free speech, limits on state powers to regulate commerce, avoiding unfair restrictions on trade, and the interests of small business. The courts equivocate as well. In some cases - e.g., Missouri vs. American Blast Fax - US courts found "that the provision prohibiting the sending of unsolicited advertisements is unconstitutional".

According to Spamlaws.com, the 107th Congress, for instance, discussed these laws but never enacted them:

Unsolicited Commercial Electronic Mail Act of 2001 (H.R. 95), Wireless Telephone Spam Protection Act (H.R. 113), Anti-Spamming Act of 2001 (H.R. 718), Anti-Spamming Act of 2001 (H.R. 1017), Who Is E-Mailing Our Kids Act (H.R. 1846), Protect Children From E-Mail Smut Act of 2001 (H.R. 2472), Netizens Protection Act of 2001 (H.R. 3146), "CAN SPAM" Act of 2001 (S. 630).

Anti-spam laws fared no better in the 106th Congress. Some of the states have picked up the slack. Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The situation is no better across the pond. The European parliament decided in 2001 to allow each member country to enact its own spam laws, thus avoiding a continent-wide directive and directly confronting the communications ministers of the union. Paradoxically, it also decided, in March 2002, to restrict SMS spam. Confusion clearly reigns. Finally, in May 2002, it adopted strong anti-spam provisions as part of a Directive on Data Protection.

Responding to this unfavorable legal environment, spam is relocating to developing countries, such as Malaysia, Nepal, and Nigeria. In a May 2005 report, the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) warned that these countries lack the technical know-how and financial resources (let alone the will) to combat spam. Their users, anyhow deprived of bandwidth, endure, as a result, a less reliable service and an intermittent access to the Internet;

"Spam is a much more serious issue in developing countries...as it is a heavy drain on resources that are scarcer and costlier in developing countries than elsewhere" - writes the report's author, Suresh Ramasubramanian, an OECD advisor and postmaster for Outblaze.com.

ISPs, spam monitoring services, and governments in the rich industrialized world react by placing entire countries - such as Macedonia and Costa Rica - on black lists and, thus denying access to their users en bloc.

International collaboration against the looming destruction of the Internet by crime organizations is budding. The FTC had just announced that it will work with its counterparts abroad to cut zombie computers off the network. A welcome step - but about three years late. Spammers the world over are still six steps ahead and are having the upper hand.

While there are plenty of legitimate virtual opportunities for those who want to work from home, there are plenty of scams as well. Fortunately, there are resources you can use that can help during your search. The BBB (www.bbb.org) or Rip Off Report (www.ripoffreport.com) are sources you can use online to learn more about a company before applying for a job. Not only will these help you know if the employer is legitimate, you'll also be able to find out what, if any, unresolved complaints customers and clients may have about the company.

By searching for a company using these databases, you will be able to obtain basic information about a company including how long it has been in business, if the company exists under a different name, and if there are any complaints about the company or its employees filed by others looking for a work-from-home opportunity.

Finding Legitimate Employment

In order to find legitimate virtual jobs, you need to take the time to research all companies you are interested in working for. Even though an ad may seem legitimate, it may not be. It is only by researching the company will you be able to determine if you're being scammed.

The first step is to visit the company's website. If they don't have a website, then you should conduct a company search on the BBB or the Rip Off Report site. In addition to company profiles, you can also read customer or employee complaints and learn if the company is being sued for any reason.

After visiting the company's website, you should call the department that's hiring and ask questions about the position. If the hiring manager is unavailable or doesn't provide you with much information, it's best to find another opportunity. When companies hire for virtual positions, they're prepared to most questions applicants have. Many hiring managers are able to send you additional information via email or regular post as well.

Never give out personal information over the phone when speaking with a hiring manager. If they ask for your social security number or bank account information, it is probably a scam.

You can use the BBB (www.bbb.org) or Rip Off Report (www.ripoffreport.com) to file a claim if you have been scammed or if you want to warn others. Filing a claim is easy and free. Your claim will be investigated and the results posted on the websites.

Questions to Ask about Virtual Jobs

Questions to ask when speaking to a hiring manager include the following:
* What is the company's web address?
* How long have they been using virtual employees?
* What is the starting salary?
* Type of experience needed
* Types of training provided
* Application process

While many potential virtual employers require you to pay for a background check, never send money upfront. If you are asked to send money upfront, you should consider the position to be a scam. Legitimate companies never ask for money from their applicants before they have started the application process. If a background check fee is required, it is usually near the end of the actual interview process after you have spoken with company representatives and completed skills tests. I'll say it again never pay a company an upfront fee just to apply to work for them.

Once you've determined the company to be legitimate, you should proceed with the application process. Finding a virtual position that allows you to work from home can be a dream come true. As a self-proclaimed skeptic looking for a REAL way to make honest $ on the internet, it took a long time to find something I felt was worth investigating. I have checked out many sites, trying to compare potential with time and $ required to make them work. All I wanted was something where within a few days I saw results and the more I put in, the more I got out.

There is money to be made on the internet if you know how, the problem is finding a proven way that anyone can follow. Most of the sites I checked out claimed to teach you how, but charge large amounts and deliver only vague information that did not help me. Finally found a system that delivered real results for me.

When I found Mark Warren's Ultimate Wealth Package, I started out trying to poke holes in the system to prove it did not work, but could not find any holes in it. Even found several independent research sites that had compared his system to many others, basically confirming my findings.

The most recent research site found (www.brlent.com) compares 3 systems proven to work, listing unbiased strengths and weaknesses of each. I encourage you to look at this comparison if you are considering the Internet as an income source.

You never know who you are dealing with. Always assume the worst.

LAST week, I heard on BFM Radio an interview with a Malaysian about the meaning of Merdeka. When he was asked about the so-called "social contract" that was supposedly made by our founding fathers, and whether he believed it existed, he said that if it didn't, why don't we make one now?

Who needs such a social contract? Why should there be one 52 years after our nation attained independence? You mean, after all these years of Malaysian citizens living together and co-developing this blessed land, we still need a social contract? Whatever for? Because we don't trust one another? We need something akin to a pre-nuptial contract? Hey, brother, the wedding took place 52 years ago!

By now, we should have settled in nicely to the marriage, come to understand one another better, respect one another's rights and beliefs, feel secure in the partnership. And most of all, not take each other for granted.

I don't think there ever was a nuptial agreement … er, social contract. Our founding fathers discussed the terms of agreement before independence could be achieved and most of that was incorporated into the Constitution. It is only in recent times, when certain parties began to feel a sense of insecurity in the face of perceived contentious challenges, that this idea of a social contract has been touted.

To me, it is merely a ploy to remind certain groups that they should know their place and therefore not make any demands. Thus, to give attention to such a ploy and go through the rigmarole of working out a social contract would be to engage in a messy – and unnecessary – exercise.

Our energy would be better channelled towards focusing on what needs to be done today. What is most pressing is the here and now. Letters in the English-language newspapers lament that there are now reports of racism every day in the press. Some call out to Malaysians to "embrace our differences", "make co-existence our guiding light", "uphold unity at all times". Why are we still saying these after 52 years?

You may have seen news reports of the link between New Zealand dairying giant, Fonterra, and the destruction of rainforests in Indonesia and Malaysia.

As a Greenpeace supporter, I thought you would like to know that your support has enabled us to expose this environmental crime.

Fonterra owns 50 per cent of RD1, which has formed a joint venture with Wilmar International - a palm company with a terrible reputation for destroying rainforests to make way for palm plantations.

In Indonesia and Malaysia, ancient forests are being cut and burned down in order to make way for palm plantations. This deforestation,and the burning of peat lands, are contributing in a major way to climate change. This is the reason that Indonesia is the worlds third biggest greenhouse gas emitter.

The destruction is also wiping out the habitat of endangered animals like the orangutan and the Sumatran tiger.

I have just returned from Indonesia, where I witnessed this first hand, and the evidence that we have gathered has enabled us to tell this story to New Zealand.

The growing demand for palm kernels as animal feed in New Zealand is a key contributor to the problem. Fonterra is using supplementary feed to drive the increasing industrialisation and intensification of dairying in this country.

You may have heard the claim this is just a by-product of the palm industry as if that made it acceptable. However, nothing could be further from the truth. The Malaysian Palm Oil Board describes palm animal feed as an important economic part of the palm industry. It is indefensible for Fonterra and New Zealand to have any involvement in this destructive trade.

That is causing major environmental damage, and our agricultural emissions are rising rapidly. Our clean, green reputation is at risk.

The importation of palm-kernel animal feed must stop. Please email the New Zealand Government as it needs to put pressure on Fonterra and help stop palm based animal feed being imported into New Zealand

Be careful how you list names on your cell phone! Be Safe!

This lady has changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag which contained her mobile phone, Credit card, purse...etc. ... was stolen.

20 minutes later when she called her Hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened. Hubby says "I've just received your sms text asking about our Pin number. I replied a little while ago."

They rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The pickpocket had actually used the stolen hand phone to text "hubby" in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from the bank account.

The lesson:

Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list.

Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, sweetheart...... Dad, Mum etc.......

And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked thru texts, CONFIRM by calling back.

Also, when you're being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet "family and friends" who text you.

Amazon EC2 Launches New Availability Zone in US East
Starting today, you can use Amazon EC2 instances in Availability Zone us-east-1d. All existing EC2 features such as Amazon EC2 running Microsoft Windows, EBS, AMIs, and Elastic IPs will work just like in any other zone. Availability Zones are distinct locations that are designed to be insulated from failures in other zones. This allows you to protect your applications from possible failures in a single location. Availability Zones also provide inexpensive, low latency network connectivity to other Availability Zones in the same Region.

Now Available: Monitoring, Auto Scaling and Elastic Load Balancing for Amazon EC2
Amazon EC2 customers can now access Amazon CloudWatch for monitoring AWS cloud resources, Auto Scaling for automatically growing and shrinking capacity based on demand, and Elastic Load Balancing for distributing incoming traffic across Amazon EC2 compute instances. Together, these capabilities provide businesses and developers with greater visibility into the health and usage of AWS compute resources, and allow them to further improve the performance of their applications and operate more efficiently.

Introducing AWS Import/Export for Physical Data Transfer
AWS has announced the limited beta of AWS Import/Export, a new offering that accelerates moving large amounts of data into and out of AWS using portable storage devices for transport. For significant data sets, AWS Import/Export is often faster than Internet transfer and more cost effective than upgrading your connectivity. You can use AWS Import/Export for migrating data into the cloud, sending backups to AWS, and interchanging data with others.

Amazon Simple Pay Subscriptions and Free Payment Processing Offer
You can now use Amazon Simple Pay Subscriptions to charge your customers on a recurring basis. If you offer digital content subscriptions, collect membership dues or recurring donations, this service is for you. Plus, now through September 30 get free payment processing for Amazon Simple Pay or Checkout by Amazon, a complete e-commerce checkout solution, offered by Amazon Payments.

Amazon CloudFront Adds Access Logging Capability
Amazon CloudFront has released access logs which show you details about every request delivered through Amazon CloudFront. They contain a comprehensive set of information about requests for your content, including the object requested, the date and time of the request, the edge location serving the request, the client IP address, the referrer and the user agent. There are no fees for using the access logs, beyond normal Amazon S3 charges to write, store and retrieve the logs.

AWS Security Center and Security Whitepaper
This week, we released the AWS Security Center, a central location from which you can obtain the latest versions of our security whitepaper, receive security updates and where you can report any security concerns. In addition, we've published the June 2009 version of our AWS Overview of Security Processes whitepaper (PDF), which should help answer additional questions about physical and operational security processes for network infrastructure controlled by AWS.

New Partner and Customer Announcements
Several partners and customers have recently announced new services on top of AWS: Citrix announced a new cloud solution called Citrix C3 Lab that allows companies of all sizes to use AWS as part of their standard technology infrastructure. First Affiliate Convention, mid-June, Denver CO

The first of a series of conventions targeting working affiliate marketers is set to open in Denver Colorado in mid June. Affiliate Convention's inaugural conference takes place June 17 - 20 in Denver. Preliminary attendance figures indicate that over 70% of registered attendees are working affiliates, the folks whose personal efforts comprise the bulk of the work performed in the affiliate marketing industry.

Affiliate Convention is going to be an interesting event, no matter what happens on the ground. Having booked an amazing line-up of speakers and scheduled an ambitious networking agenda, the Affiliate Convention promises attendees an informative and truly fun networking and learning experience. As an added bonus, Affiliate Convention is open to all working affiliate marketers at no cost!

One of the goals of the Affiliate Convention organizers is to create a conference series where admittance is free for the grassroots workers of the industry. It's an approach that makes sense in a counter-intuitive way. While a free conference costs organizers tens of thousands of dollars in potential revenue, the show will attract thousands of affiliate marketers, bringing far more attention to sponsors and trade-show exhibitors. That has helped organizers attract a diverse range of sponsors which, in turn, makes organizing speakers and evening events far easier. As with a well tuned affiliate marketing campaign the smart initial promotion has added to the success of everyone involved in the network.

Holding the Affiliate Convention in Denver Colorado was another way organizers have tried to keep costs down for working affiliate marketers. The evenings and networking events should be interesting as well. The following night, WebmasterRadio.FM throws one of its legendary AffiliateBash parties. Another sponsored party is scheduled for the third night and, following a morning of intensive workshops on Saturday, a final webmaster's afternoon in a pub is planned. All in all, Affiliate Convention is shaping up to offer a must-attend four days in Denver.

What Goes Into Commercial Cigarettes?

For many people, cigarettes are merely something that they buy and enjoy without a second thought, but have you wondered what was in the cigarettes that you are smoking?

The truth is, there are more than 500 ingredients in commercially made cigarettes, and they will do everything from keeping the cigarette lit to producing a distinctively recognizable smell. When you are thinking about what is really in your cigarettes, you'll find that some ingredients keep coming up time after time.

When looking at the ingredients in cigarettes, you'll find that you will see a number of chemicals that are designed to kill weeds and insects, including DDT. These chemicals are used to keep the tobacco plants healthy but can take a toll on your own health over an extended period of time. Similarly, benzene, which is linked to leukemia, and formaldehyde, which is linked to lung cancer, will appear as well. Most of these chemicals have a preservative quality, giving the cigarettes a longer shelf life.

When you are considering what you can do to reduce your health risk when it comes to cigarettes, you will find that switching to hand-rolled cigarettes might be the key. While many people feel that hand-rolling cigarettes is old-fashioned or too much trouble, you'll soon see that there are a number of reasons to roll your cigarettes. You'll be able to have more control over the finished product, and you'll find that you have a better understanding of smoking itself. You'll find that the only way to really be sure about what you are smoking is to grow it and dry it yourself!

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Militants and hate groups increasingly use social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and YouTube as propaganda tools to recruit new members, according to a report by the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

The report released on Wednesday noted a 25 percent rise in the past year in the number of "problematic" social networking groups on the Internet.

The report was based on "over 10,000 problematic Web sites, social networking groups, portals, blogs, chat rooms, videos and hate games on the Internet which promote racial violence, anti-semitism, homophobia, hate music and terrorism."

"Every aspect of the Internet is being used by extremists of every ilk to repackage old hatred, demean the 'Enemy,' to raise funds and since 9/11, recruit and train Jihadist terrorists," the Center said in a statement.

Examples of what the report calls "digital terrorism and hate" range from a Facebook group named "Death to gays" in Croatian to a YouTube video of a Koran being burned and various Web sites promoting militant groups such as Hezbollah, the Taliban, al Qaeda and Colombia's FARC.

The Jewish human rights group named for the renowned Nazi hunter has been monitoring use of the Internet by extremists for over a decade. It said the rise of social networking sites such as Facebook had accelerated the spread of racist and bigoted views in recent years.

It said Facebook officials had met with its experts and pledged to remove sites that violate its terms of usage, "but with over 200 million users, online bigots have to date outpaced efforts to remove them."

HARD TO ERADICATE

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the center, said Facebook recently removed several Holocaust denial sites, including one that featured a cartoon of Adolf Hitler in bed with Anne Frank, whose diary written in hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam is among the best known stories of the Holocaust.

"The main social networkers understand they have a problem," Cooper told Reuters. "The company that's tried to do its best so far has been Facebook, yet we've seen that sometimes your best isn't enough to eliminate a problem."

He pointed out a YouTube user whose racist content has caused his postings on the site to be taken down repeatedly, but he simply creates a new user profile, or channel, and posts the material again, boasting that it is his 64th channel.

Extremist groups are also setting up their own social networking sites, the report said, picking out one called "New Saxon," described as "a Social Networking site for people of European descent" produced by an American Neo-Nazi group called the National Socialist Movement.

Other groups have created online games such as one created by an Iranian organization and called "Special Operation 85 - Hostage Rescue," and one called "Border Patrol" in which the player has to shoot Mexicans, including women and children, as they try to come over the border into the United States.

Leena Shehadeh, a 17-year-old who attended a presentation of the report with her class in New York, said such games and racist language are often treated as jokes by her generation.

Someone shared the following cases through an email received by The Mighty Pen website.
(1) Today I passed by a building which has an ATM machine. There was an old man looking at me. Suddenly, he called me. He said he didn't know how to read, so he gave me his ATM card and asked me to help him withdraw money from the ATM machine. I answered 'NO! If you need help, ask the security to help you.' Then he said 'never mind…' and continued to find other people to help him…

REMEMBER: ATM machines have CCTVs. If you help him he will later claim that you have robbed him or stolen his ATM card. Besides, his ATM card could be a stolen one. So please be careful of these tactics.

(2) Suddenly your house lights go off. From your window you find that your neighbours still have their lights. So you go out of your house to check the Meter Box. But once you open the door, a knife will be pointing at you and preventing you from closing it. This is when you will be robbed and injured.

REMEMBER: Even though your electricity suddenly goes off, DO NOT open your door immediately. Look around to see if there is anything unusual or if there is any noise around.

(3) This is another incident. You may have heard about it before; it is about a lady who saw a kid crying by the roadside. When she spoke to the kid, the kid told her he was lost and wanted her to take him home. The kid even gave her a paper with his house address. So she took him home. But when she rang the door bell, she had an electric shock. Later when she woke up, she was naked in an empty room.

REMEMBER: Being such a compassionate and helpful person might not be a good thing these days. Girls, please be careful. DON'T BE TOO KIND!

(4) One day, there was an old lady outside my house holding two packets of sweets. At first I thought she was our neighbour and wanted to give us these packs of sweets as a gift. But then when she spoke, I realise that she was foreigner. I could not understand what she was talking about. I guessed she must be asking for money. I sensed there was something wrong and immediately closed the door and ignored her. Later, I found she and an accomplice robbed someone else down the road.

(5) I was at the ATM machine to withdraw some money. Behind me, there was an old lady. She asked me whether I was able to withdraw my money because she said she had problem with the machine. Suddenly a small girl came up beside me. The small girl was tugging and squeezing in front of me. I thought she was just naughty and playful. But then, the small girl placed her hand inside the tray of the ATM machine where the money was being dispensed out; ready to take away my money. I sensed something wrong and immediately pushed her away. Later I realised that the small girl and the old lady worked hand in hand together. She was trying to steal my money while the old lady was trying to distract my attention by asking me questions!

REMEMBER: BE VERY CAREFUL when you are at an ATM machine and be alert. Look out for anyone suspicious around you!

(6) My parents are retired and stay at home most days. One afternoon, a young stranger went to their house and said his motorcycle had no more fuel and the petrol station was too far away, for him to push his bike there. So he asked my parents for an empty coke bottle to buy some petrol. He said he will pay RM2 for the bottle. So my mum gave one coke bottle to him. He really took out the money from his pocket, but it was a RM 100 note. He told my mum he had no small change and asked my mum to give him the change. Luckily my mum was smart. She just told him to take it for free.

REMEMBER: obviously that note is fake! Who would want to pay for RM2 for an empty coke bottle! It's very OBVIOUS that that stranger was a trickster.

(7) This happened in Bali . A newly married couple was having their honeymoon at the hotel. When both were in the changing room, the wife suddenly went missing. The husband was very anxious and went around finding her. He asked the hotel staff to help him find her. Then he thought his wife was just playing hide and seek. So he went back and waited for his wife. After a few hours, he decided to call the police. Three weeks passed and there was still no news about his missing wife. So he went back and was very disappointed and sad. A few years later, he came back to Bali , to watch a 'FREAK SHOW' in an old house. He saw a dirty and rusty metal cage. Inside there was a lady without limbs. Her body including the face was full of scars. When he had a closer look at her face, he was shocked to find out that she was his missing wife caged there and used for begging.

(8) This happened in Shanghai . A few years ago, a lady reported to the police that her cousin sister was missing in the shopping complex. But after five years, one of her friends found her cousin sister begging at the road side on one of the streets in Bangkok , Thailand . The worst thing was that her cousin sister had no more limbs and her body was tied to a lamp post with a shackle (metal chain).

(9) Let's just shorten this story. DO NOT open your house door when you hear the sound of a BABY CRYING! It might be a trap! Women in the house must be alert to this form of trick. The police said it is the work of a robber or murderer using the recording of a crying baby to attract your attention. This normally happens at night and when you are alone in the house.

(10) I read an email that was sent by my friend. Her friend, known as A, went to Luo Hu Commercial City with 2 friends, B and C. Luo Hu Commercial City is known as the Shenzhen counterfeit goods distribution center. There are many people there. It's also near to the Shenzhen train station and Hong Kong 's Luo Hu Port. C went to the toilet at the shopping centre while A and B waited outside. After waiting for a long, time they felt uneasy and went into the toilet to look for her. When they went in, there was nobody inside. Both were scared and they called C's phone. There was no reply. So they reported to the police. The police asked them whether they had seen anybody suspicious going into the toilet. Both said there was none and it's impossible to bring a person out of the toilet without them noticing! Then A remembered seeing a cleaner pushing a trolley in, and then coming out of the toilet. The police told them that were not the first time such a thing happened there. The police suspected a gang of criminals who were always attacking women in the the toilets of shopping complexes. They use cleaners to kidnap people to harvest their organs for sale.

REMEMBER: please be careful when using the toilet. Do not go to the wash room or toilet ALONE! Please at least have a partner with you.

(11) This happened in Klang, Malaysia. This afternoon (14/04/2009), while waiting for my husband in front of the bank ( MBB, Jalan Taiping, Klang), I saw a Malay lady bending down to throw some RM1.00 notes behind the tyre of a car parked in front of mine.

After throwing the notes, she knocked the car's window to tell him that he has dropped some money. Right after that, a man came knocking on my window, also telling me that I have dropped something.

Fortunately, I was not conned by them because I have witnessed what that Malay lady was doing. They came in a group of 4 (1 lady and 3 guys whom all look like foreigners; like the Arabian/ Moroccan type).They will rob you once you open your car door to check.

You would have learnt by now that stock markets always recover from downturns. They then eventually bounce back higher than before.

Well, in reality the index is not on sale. However, you can buy what is called an Exchange Traded Fund (ETF), which tracks the market index you are investing in. There are ETFs that track the Dow Jones Index, the S&P 500 Index, the Nikkei 225, the Straits Times Index and etc.

The process of buying an ETF is exactly the same as how you would buy any other stock. It is listed on the index like a stock.

However, instead of buying a share in one company, you are actually buying a basket of top stocks that make up that index. In a sense, an ETF is a vehicle constructed like a unit trust/mutual fund, but with the convenience and liquidity of a stock.

Why Buy ETFs Instead of Mutual Funds?

You may be already familiar with the concept of unit trusts (mutual funds). This is an investment scheme where a fund management company pools money from thousands of small investors. A fund manager will take all this cash and invest it in a portfolio of stocks. http://tinyurl.com/panic2k9

There are many mutual funds that are specially constructed to track the index. In such cases, the fund manager simply takes the investors' cash and invests it in the same component stocks that make up the index. This is known as an index fund. This basket of stocks concept is similar to the structure of the ETF.

However, the problem with index funds and mutual funds is that they usually have HIGHER SALES FEES from the banks, as well as management fees. On top of that, you cannot buy and sell your funds as easily as how you would for a stock.

The price of your fund is usually only quoted at the end of the day and you will have to go through a longer process of redeeming your money.

Most funds also lock the investor into a minimum period, which does not allow premature withdrawal without due penalties.

This means you have to hold on to the fund even when it is losing a considerable amount of your capital. Such contracts can range from a year to four years and longer.

You can get around all those charges and the rigidity with an ETF. It offers the flexibility of a stock, since it is listed on the stock exchange.

This means unlike unit trusts, you can buy and sell ETFs at any time. They have very low management fees, ultimately meaning higher returns for you.

Why the Spam Carbon Footprint Study is Wrong

McAfee just released the details of a new study, conducted and published by ICF International, which seeks to measure the carbon footprint of spam. The study's conclusions: The global annual energy used to transmit, process, and filter spam is the equivalent to powering 2.4 million homes, and spam filtering saves 135 terawatt hours--the equivalent of taking 13 million cars off the road. The study decides that the average greenhouse gas emissions associated with an individual spam email are about 0.3 grams of CO2. Fascinating, right?

But it's completely wrong.

There's one basic tenet of this study I take issue with, and it centers around the finding that most of the energy consumption associated with spam (nearly 80%) comes from end-users deleting spam and searching for legitimate email.

The study doesn't really detail the methodology too well, but we can conclude form this that the real carbon footprint of a spam message lies in the energy wasted by PCs, notably the fixed amount of time users spend dealing with spam. The math sounds solid: Figure out the average power that a PC draws, the average amount of time spent dealing with each message, and the total volume, and calculate away.

But is that energy wasted really associated with spam? Do people turn on their PCs, read their email, and then turn them off? Or would their PCs simply be on anyway? If you had absolutely no spam in your inbox, would you turn your PC off earlier--or use the extra time you've saved to play more World of Warcraft? Business users leave their PCs on all day regardless of whether they've finished sorting their inboxes, so in my eyes you can't count any of the energy exhausted by their PCs. Besides, many email users don't have to deal with (much) spam anyhow, with filters on the job. (Well, my old Hotmail account gets hundreds of spam mails a day, but really, I only have to deal with them when the computer is supposed to be on anyway).

In my eyes, you could really substitute "Bejeweled" or email in general or any other computing activity for spam and reach a similar computing, if all we're doing is quantifying uptime. Bottom line: PCs waste energy, and humans leave them on too long, wasting energy. But spam? It's kind of meaningless here.

Twitter plays whack-a-worm over the weekend [Updated]

Throughout the Easter weekend, and continuing this morning, the staff at Twitter has been trying to quell an outbreak of a computer worm created by the 17-year-old owner of a social-media Web site.

The worm, which puts a link to StalkDaily.com on Twitter users' profiles and then spews updates - the content of which has changed over time - keeps returning, even though Twitter's security team thought it had been stopped several times.

From co-founder Biz Stone, writing at the Twitter blog:

At about 2AM on Saturday, four accounts were created that began spreading a worm on Twitter. From 7:30AM until 11AM PST, our security team worked on eliminating the vectors that could identify this worm. At that time, about 90 accounts were compromised. We identified and secured these accounts.

Later in the afternoon, a second wave of the worm hit Twitter and this time it was much more intense. We got back to work and the situation was contained. About 100 accounts were compromised. Again, we identified and secured the accounts. We also identified and deleted malicious content that could work to further spread the worm.

On Sunday morning, we had another bout of attacks. Our team quickly pulled together and started fighting the attackers in real time. Again, we secured the accounts that had been compromised and removed any content that might help spread the worm. All told, we identified and deleted almost 10,000 tweets that could have continued to spread the worm.

But as is often the case with worms, which spread in an automated fashion from machine to machine, the infection is not over.

We are currently addressing a new manifestation of the worm attack.

No passwords, phone numbers, or other sensitive information were compromised as part of this renewed attack.

The worm is apparently the creation of "Mikeyy" Mooney ~~of Brooklyn~~, who used it to draw attention to StalkDaily, which he founded. The worm uses a cross-site-scripting attack (XSS), which injects malicious code into a Web page. Jay Abraham is not a real estate investor, per se,

Latest e-mail hoaxes and how to avoid being scammed.

Got something phishy in your mailbox lately?

A recent survey conducted by ClearMyMail revealed that spam has increased significantly during the second quarter of 2008, the shocking numbers behind the spam e-mail threat indicate a troubling time for Internet users. The following are nine of the most prolific dangers.

Phishing
Is the process to acquire user data both criminally and fraudulently – often by masquerading as a trusted source or business. The user will unwittingly reveal financial information, memorable dates and passwords in response to a legitimate-looking e-mail or phone call. In the case of e-mail, the most telling sign of a phishing attack will be a link referencing a bogus URL. In the past couple of years Phishers have spoofed a variety of different services – these have included online banking sites, online auctions and social networking groups.

Nigerian Money Scams
This is also known as the 419 scam (the Nigerian penal code for this type of crime). It is a confidence trick that encourages you to invest small sums of money with the promise of a larger payoff. The e-mail is usually made to look like it was sent on behalf of a Government or an individual, who for some ridiculous reason are sitting on a vast sum of money. These scammers are an imaginative bunch, the stories range from rich foreign-nationals killed in plane crashes to corrupt government officials who have embezzled funds. If you agree to assist in retrieving the funds you are promised a share of the haul, which is jolly nice of them – isn't it?

Lottery Scams
Everybody dreams of winning big at least once in their life – millions of pounds are spent each year in the search for that elusive golden ticket. But what happens when you receive an e-mail claiming you're a winner when you haven't spent a penny? Lottery tricks are on the rise - but as long as you remember a few simple facts you can win too.

Like a lot of these scams the sender's identity will always be assumed or false - they might pretend to be a representative of a global lottery organisation, or, a recent trend is to imitate a big company like Microsoft. This is done in the hope of gaining your trust and to appear credible, but don't be fooled, the lure of the prize fund is merely a hook. The aim of the scam is the extraction of your personal information and you will never see a penny of the alleged prize-fund.

Withdrawal of 'free services'
This is a particularly popular e-mail trick. How often have you received "[Company Name] is withdrawing their free service". A list of popular products that have knowingly been targeted by such poisonous e-mails have included Hotmail, Messenger, Facebook, Myspace and Yahoo. And while such messages are designed to fool the user, the overriding aim is to tarnish the reputation of the service provider. The notice was once circulated to Hotmail users, and it is of course totally bogus.

"You must send this message to X number of friends to keep the service free!" This particular e-mail is engineered to cause panic among users. It is probably wise to point out that many services require you to log on once in every 90 days to ensure your account is not marked for deletion.

E-mail Petitions
I must admit that I am guilty of participating in the odd petition. But while their interference and damage is minimal they must also be included in our list of offenders. Signing and circulating such a petition fails to influence the higher powers or benefit the greater good. It would be lovely to make a real change with little effort but sadly this is the stuff of fantasy. As such the major short-coming of the e-petition is the lack of paper and ink it is written on – and in the eyes of many, this electronic version carries little substance.

Chain Mail
Not the stuff of knights and horses but those annoying e-mails that we love to forward on. By participating in such practices we are helping the spread of misinformation. These chains are often disguised with helpful warnings against a made-up danger or offer to reveal "your secret crush" if you press a combination of keys on your keyboard. Chains are becoming increasingly popular on social networking websites.

Virus Warning
The warning conceals an empty threat; a cleverly crafted virus hoax is almost as damaging as the real deal. Frightened individuals forward this very warning to family members, colleagues and friends alike. The fallout causes chaos and often brings mail servers to their knees. The effect can sometimes stretch even further and lead to some users becoming blasé about some threats - thereby ignoring all future virus warning messages. The bottom line is, don't rely on e-mails to tell you about the latest threats. Instead, invest in some decent virus protection and routinely scan for dangers.

Sympathy Scams
Even the most sensitive of subject matter cannot escape the pranksters reach. Whether it be September 11 and an e-mail advertising the last photo from the World Trade Center deck, or the plea to help find a missing child. Such attempts pray upon our empathy and take advantage of our good nature. Such examples promise to extend your support when you forward the message on to others, but obviously you know better than that?

Social Network Scams
Unsurprisingly hoaxers have now begun turning their attention to social networking websites and such attacks are on the rise. One of the more notorious threats is a worm that goes by the moniker 'Koobface'. This has been known to attack users of Facebook and other social networks by posting comments on your profile (posing as one of your friends). These comments will contain veiled links to external websites that in turn compromise your security. My advice would be to delete any suspicious messages and ask questions later! Always be on your guard, these days you can never be too careful.
